Social networks for research

What social networks can I use for research?
There are several opportunities that the internet offers to be able to do research. Social networks are one of them and through them, it is possible to find an infinity of information. I would use platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and the like, to communicate the results of a search, being these social networks much more popular and widespread among users. On the other hand, this would involve having to communicate using less scientific language to get the research message to as many people as possible. Instead, for the research of study material (articles, reviews, publications, etc.), I would tend to work on professional channels, such as the academic social networks Research Gate, Academia, Mendeley, on which it is also possible to establish collaborations between colleagues in other parts of the world, and on which it is possible to open debates and feed the desire for research.

How can I take advantage of the use of these social networks in my field of knowledge?
Social networks can be used not only to do research and therefore to search bibliographic sources, articles from specialized magazines, publications related to conferences or other research, also to establish smart collaborative relationships with other colleagues in other parts of the world who perhaps share topics such as mine or related to it. The exchange of information travels fast and this allows you to have more sources and more time to devote to their consultation. Furthermore, a research work published on social networks certainly has greater visibility by increasing the possibility of arousing interest in representatives of institutions, public bodies, private companies with the not remote possibility of being financed to continue the research or the possibility of seeing new ones being opened. professional horizons.

What is your opinion on social network services for researcher 2.0?
In a globalized world where each of us is required to constantly keep up with sudden changes, social networks, if used with common sense and attention, can be indispensable tools for a researcher, allowing him to reduce distances with others researchers and sometimes even with the places of research. Furthermore, the ease with which social networks can reach people allows wide-ranging dissemination of research results and scientific information.
But in my opinion, in the use of social networks, two fundamental aspects must always be taken into consideration, namely the originality and substantiation of the information that is disseminated, and the cultural level of the user of the social networks to whom the research will then be made known.
As for the first aspect, those who use other people's publications as sources for conducting research must put all their knowledge and tools to analyze and understand information, with a waste of time and effort. Paradoxically this could generate a search (of the truth) in the search (of the source), with a loss of time by the researcher.

As for the second aspect, on the other hand, if scientific and popular social networks are excluded, the cultural level of the users is as varied as possible, requiring the researcher to make an additional effort to make the research accessible to the audience too.

Critical reflection on the course.

During this course I had the pleasure of working with applications with different functions, but which I consider all useful if not indispensable tools for a researcher, both for the collection of material being studied and for the promotion of the work done.
Some of them were already known to me such as Google Scholar, the Google Drive work tools, or Research Gate, or even Blogger, but thanks to this course I was better able to appreciate its potential. All the others, however, I had the pleasure of knowing them and using them in this course.
Blogger, for example, I have had the opportunity to use it in the past for more playful than scientific purposes. On this occasion, however, I realized that if used well, it can become a good scientific dissemination tool simple to use and feed. Furthermore, the possibility of integrating it with tools for the creation of a digital identity such as About.me and ORCID with which an author can present himself to the public makes a blog and the contents that are published on it more credible and accredited. I think About.me is a good starting point to create an official biography, gathering information and images that somehow talk about you, your interests and what you do, on one page. ORCID instead gives the certainty of having a unique identifier avoiding confusion in case of homonymy.
To express its full potential, a blog must be constantly maintained by updating the published material and above all, it must be supported with appropriate promotional campaigns.
Feedly is also a tool known to me and I use it regularly as it allows me to always have at hand all the latest information from the websites that I generally consult for further information and updates in my professional sector, that is, architecture. In other words, can create my press review. I had heard of Diigo but thanks to this course I was able to try it: a good social bookmarking that will allow me simpler storage of web resources that, if necessary, thanks to tags, I will be able to find more easily than archiving through bookmarks of the browser.
I use Google Drive apps often to collaborate with colleagues by sharing folders, text documents, spreadsheets and presentations, which thanks to this social software, are always promptly updated by the contributions of all those involved in the work. In addition to sharing files with different levels of participation, one of the major advantages that Google Drive and its applications offer is the possibility of having a document saved on the network and being able to view and edit it from any device, at any time and wherever you are. are. In practice, your work is always at hand.
Regarding the importance of social networks as tools for connecting professionals and promoting their work to the widest possible audience, I think I have already expressed my opinion in the previous points. In this regard, thanks to this course, I got to know Hootesuite, a brilliant application that with a single platform, with a simple and intuitive dashboard, will allow me optimal management of my social media strategy, managing to verify the impact of the contents that public and allowing me a better professional promotion.
With Symbaloo that I did not know and that I appreciated thanks to the course, I believe that I will no longer use the bookmarks function of my browser.

In conclusion, the course was really interesting, well structured and full of practical contents, exercises and tutorials both on applications already known to me, but above all on applications to which probably due to lack of time, I would never have had the opportunity to know. Instead, I learned that with a good organization of all these tools, you can save time in research and dissemination of information, as well as in the social promotion of your professionalism.
